Default Custom field shows in threadbit but not in GARS_pb

I have two custom templates associated with a type:

gars_threadbit_xxxxx
gars_pb_xxxxx

I use the following html:

<div class="mediumusername"><strong>$thread[gars2]</strong></div>

This displays properly in the threadbit but not in the postbit, when placed in the postbit it doesn't display anything.

I'm stumped.
